After a disappointing joint 11th place at the area we had great hopes of a better result at the Worcester Competitive Music Festival this weekend. Although generally a fairly low key affair, competition included a local 2nd section band and so the gauntlet was laid down to show that we can still hold our own at their level.
After a performance on stage that we were
quite happy with, we were pleased to be awarded first place with
4 points gap to the second placed band! (who incidently weren't
the 2nd section band; must try not to gloat too much :-). The
event also saw the debut appearance by the newly formed Stourport
Brass Ensemble (including myself on trom) competing in the Open
Brass Ensemble class. Unfortunately we were the only entry and
so picked up the prize for that too, even though the playing was
a bit nervous. Any challengers for next year?
Future developments include, hopefully, a lottery grant for a much needed new set of instruments. Our chairman, Roland Deakin (my Dad) has put much towards this bid and we are hopeful that the efforts will bear fruit in the next couple of months.
